It may be an old menu standby to Vietnamese diners, but it's turned into a smorgasbord of discovery for scientists.

Researchers have identified a previously undocumented species of all-female lizard in the Mekong River delta that can reproduce itself by cloning, and the story of how it was discovered is almost as exotic as the animal itself.

Leiolepis ngovantrii is a small lizard found only in southern Vietnam. A Vietnamese reptile scientist who came across tanks full of the remarkably similar looking reptiles at small diners in rural villages in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province became intrigued when he noticed that all of the lizards appeared to be female.

So the scientist, Ngo Van Tri of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, contacted an American colleague about what he was seeing. His friend -- a herpetologist at La Sierra University in Riverside, California -- immediately dropped everything to come out to assess the find.

Dr. Lee Grismer and his son, Jesse Grismer, a doctoral candidate, flew all the way to Hanoi and then faced a grueling two-day motorcycle trip out to a restaurant where the owner promised to set aside a stash of the creatures for study.

But there was a little problem, says Grismer.

"Unfortunately, the owner wound up getting drunk, and grilled them all up for his patrons... so when we got there, there was nothing left."

It’s over 5,000 miles from Greece but residents from Pahang in Malaysia claim to have found a Gorgon, like the famed Medusa.

The strange creature, which has the body of a snake and the head of a human, was reportedly captured by Malaysian aborigines. The story goes that the men spotted two of the beasts, one male and one female, but only managed to catch the female. Witnesses claimed that the creature initially begged to be released back into the mountains, others say it was trying to summon the male monster to come and rescue it.

In Greek mythology Gorgons are hideous women often portrayed with live snakes for hair and a serpent’s body, one look into the eyes of a Gorgon is supposed to turn you to stone. The specimen on display in Pahang appears to be the coiled up body of a python with a human head and little skinny arms, news of the bizarre animal quickly circulated and people began paying good money to view the beast, which sadly turned out to be dead, the so called ’snake monster’ has not been verified.

Ten-month-old Lei Lei has been nicknamed the 'Michelin Baby' after tipping the scales at a whopping 20kg (3.1 stones).
According to his mother, Cheng Qingyu, her son was a normal weight at birth, but thanks to his ravenous appetite he has steadily ballooned since.
She said: 'No matter whatever he grabs, he unconsciously puts it in his mouth.
'His most favourite thing is to eat.'
Lei Lei is currently in hospital in Yiyang, southern China's Hunan province, where he is undergoing tests to see if there is a medical reason behind his weight gain.
Despite his mammoth size, the portly youngster is not the largest baby in the world.
That accolade goes to Karan Singh, of Meerut, in India, who weighed an astonishing 3 stone 7lbs at the same age..

During the heyday of his career the giant named Johann Petursson was the tallest living man on Earth. He was officially “off his throne,” by colossal Robert Wadlow (272 cm), but the Icelandic hero, lived longer, and people remembered him as a talented circus performer and extraordinary actor, and not, for example, as a sick man.

Johann K. Petursson was born in Dalvik (Iceland), Feb. 9, 1913. He was the third-highest child in the 9-child family. In 1924 a unique Icelander had a very impressive growth (according to some sources 231 cm, on the other – as many as 246 cm, and Wikipedia says that only some 221 cm), weighed 135 kg and wearing shoes size 56. Here’s the photo of his shoes taken in the museum:

Despite the volcanic appearance and strength, Petursson was a real gentleman, he never used any foul language or has ever been rude to anyone. Children loved playing with him and climbing on his shoulders. But Icelanders are hard to impress, so Johann in his hometown was no more than a very tall man with no prospects. He even had troubles finding a job because of his enormous size.

In 1934, Petursson went to Denmark, where realized that he could earn a living by showing himself of. Johanna, his sister made him some stylish outfits, and the giant went on a tour through Europe. He has performed in Music Hall with two “gnomes”. Dwarfs played on miniature accordions, and Petursson – on any giant sized instrument. The audience loved it. Concert tour was interrupted with the beginning of World War II. Having lost his case in Copenhagen, Johann was hired as a loader at the shipyard. He survived the war peacefully, carrying bags.

The war ended, Petursson resumed the show, and was taken to pencil one of the Ringling Brothers, owners of a rich American circus. A contract was signed, and the Viking ended up in the New World.

There Johann earned $ 200 a week, trading souvenirs along the way – the giant wooden rings that could fit his fingers. A silver dollar (26 mm) could easily get through these huge rings. Our giant himself was producing the rings from plastic or metal – gold, silver and lead. They looked antique as if they were worn ages ago in the ancient times of Icelandic Vikings conquests.

I don’t think these photos requires any special comment. This creature, found on Thailand, is very strange to me. You can see a lot of local folks in the background that seem to worship this creature they have “found”. The end result is an even more absurd and even humorous scene. At least they managed to turn my amazement into laughter by this baby powder and juices they brought as a tribute to this creature. They have even brought a fan to keep it well preserved for the scientists.

There has been a lot of debates about what this creature might be and that is exactly the beauty of mystery, the inability to solve it. It might be some kind of strange animal, it even looks like a mythical creature. Honestly I don’t know what to think about this funny and strange event. These pictures do raise more questions than answers….

Motorists using a bridge in the southern Russian city of Volgograd were given the ride of a lifetime by a powerful gust of wind. The new river crossing started shaking violently and a massive downpour at the same time made conditions worse. Drivers say their cars were literally thrown into the air, many thinking it was an unexpected earthquake. The shaking was so severe it caused vehicles to career into the opposite lane creating chaos. Local authorities claim the shaking of the bridge was possibly caused by an earthquake. Seismologists, however, say this is highly unlikely. Meanwhile, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an investigation into the bridge's safety and construction history.

The bridge across Volga river is 1260 meters long and 32 meters wide. It was opened less than a year ago in October 2009.

SAN ANTONIO -- An 8-foot alligator created quite a challenge for San Antonio police when it showed up Sunday at Loop 410 on the city's South Side.
The large gator stood its ground against police when they tried to move it off the roadway with some poles.
The reptile became aggressive, hissed at the officers and even chomped down on the bumper of a police cruiser.

Police were forced to close down the Southern part of Loop 410.
He just didn't want to move, an officer said. He wasn't going anywhere.
The alligator didn't bite any of the officers but it did attack some traffic cones, police said.
As far as I know there's no procedure on this other than don't get bit, an officer said.
Officers eventually managed to tie the gator's snout and drag it off into a ditch.
The gator then slithered away back to where a game warden said his home might be, Lake Mitchell.
We'll just let nature take its course and let it ease back into the pond, State Game Warden David Chavez said. We'll continue to monitor it. Hopefully it will get the hint and go back to the pond.

Marilyn Monroe as you have never seen her before - x-rays showing the Hollywood star's chest and pelvis are going under the hammer.

The images are part of a unique collection up for auction in Las Vegas later this year.

They were taken at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Florida, where Monroe was being treated. The x-ray is marked 'Marilyn Di Maggio' and date to around the time the actress was divorcing her second husband, US baseball star Joe Di Maggio.

There are high hopes for the sale at Julien's Auctions. Entertainment auctioner Darren Julien said: "We estimate the x-rays to be right around $800 to $1200 each but anticipating that they'll sell for a lot more based upon other x-rays of celebrities that we've sold."

It is widely believed Monroe suffered two miscarriages in the late 1950s and it is thought that around the time the x-rays were taken, she could have been trying to see if she was pregnant.

At first glance these objects look like they are in motion, almost like every object is falling down, especially the "strawberry blanket". In reality they are actually natural materials, like feathers, fruits and flowers, attached to nylon threads. Sculptor Claire Morgan from Belfast is the creator of this magnificent art work. She has among other things achieved a first class degree in Sculpture from Northumbria University.

Since graduating she has pursued a career solely as a visual artist. She has exhibited internationally, with solo shows, residencies and commissions across the UK, as well as group exhibitions in Europe. At an early stage she developed a strong interest in the organic, in natural processes, and in the bodily connotations of natural materials. This formed the basis for her practice as an artist creating sculptural installations and continues to influence her work at present.

SOME people call Chayne Hultgren the Space Cowboy for good reason, the Byron Bay street peformer has dared to go where no man had before - swallowing 18 razor sharp swords.
The professional sword swallower set the new Guinness World Record in Sydney today by swallowing all of the 72 centimetres long swords at the same time.

The 31-year-old beat his own previous record of 17 swords, which he set in 2008.

Bling beetle brooch bugs US customs

It was an unlikely fashion accessory but the arrival of a jewel-encrusted beetle at a US border post certainly bugged customs officers.

A woman crossing from Mexico at Brownsville, Texas, declared the live insect decorated with blue and gold as she drove up to enter the state but she did not have the right paperwork.

Pest control measures meant officers promptly confiscated the item worn as a brooch on the traveller's sweater and sent it for further inspection. The beetle was attached to the woman's clothing by a gold chain and safety pin.

The story of how the six-legged fashion victim was intercepted came in a press release and video from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), part of the security machine responsible for protecting the country from terrorists and a body more used to trumpeting the seizure of cocaine, marijuana, hidden cash or fugitives from justice.

"CBP officers seized the decorative clothing accessory and sent the live beetle to the Plant Inspection Station at Los Indios International Bridge for further identification. Because the traveller declared the insect no monetary civil penalty was issued," the official account declared.

"Moving live plant pests in any form, including pets, imported into or exported from the United States must be declared to CBP on PPQ form 526 declaration for importation or exportation, must be properly labelled and packaged prior to release by CBP."

Animal rights campaigners were less forgiving, reported the south Texan newspaper The Monitor.. Jaime Zalac, for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals,said: "Beetles may not be as cute and cuddly as puppies and kittens, but they have the same capacity to feel pain and suffer. It's ironic. We spend hours each week helping kind people find humane ways to relocate lost insects such as ants, bees and roaches that wander into their homes. People feel so good about not hurting them, while this woman paid someone to mutilate them."

Beetle species have proved popular subjects for jewellery for centuries and attaching it to live beetles is apparently not uncommon in Mexico. Jackie Kennedy is said to have been given one with emeralds.
